“My encounter with the Little Prince”
(1) The next planet was inhabited by parents. On it was a three – seater sofa where the parents are seated.
(2) “Hello,” greeted the Little Prince.
(3) The parents looked at each other, delighted to see the Little Prince. Then, they got up from their sofa and hurriedly hugged the prince.
(4) Shocked as he was, for he was hugged by strangers, he stood still. Until one of the parents spoke, “we are so glad that you are finally home child; were so worried about you.”
(5) “You called me child?” The Little Prince was confused.
(6) “Yes, my child”, answered one of the parents, and then continued, “We are parents. She (referring to the other parent) is the mother, I am the father and you, my dear, are our child.”
(7) “But I don’t have parents in our planet”, replied the little Prince.
(8) “Oh”, the mother said. “Since you are here in our planet, we shall be your parents and you shall be our child.”
(9) Still the little Prince is puzzled. He threw his questions again. He had lots of questions in mind to ask. “What do parents do? And what do I have to do as a child?”
(10) “Parents look after their children from their time of existence until the time that they can stand on their own. We pamper and take care of the children, and see to it that they are safe and teach them do the right thing so that they will grow up to be a good man, and most of all, we love our children.”, answered the father.
(11) The Little Prince, confused, said “I do the same to my flower. Am I a parent, too?”
(12) “Sort of. But the flower cannot become a parent when he grows up.” The mother answered. “But you, my child, when you grow up, you will become a parent yourself”.
(13) “I see. But what do I do as a child?” again asked the Little Prince. He would not let go of the question unless it is answered.
(14) The mother replied patiently, “You have to obey your parents, my child”.
(15) “Obey?” the Little Prince was apprehensive about the word. This is the first time he heard of it.
(16) “Yes, my child, obey means you should follow everything that we asked you to do and not to do”, Said the father.
(17) “Are you a king? You seem to be giving orders,” said the little Prince.
(18) “We are not ‘king’. We are simply parents who want to make sure our child will not get into trouble.” The father replied.
(19) I know someone who always follows orders. He must be a very good child.
(20) “Maybe…but once you are a child and you follow or not your parents’ orders, you will still be their child and you will still be loved by them. You will follow your parents’ orders because you love them in return and that you know that it will be for your own benefit. Unlike the one you know, he follows orders for the sake of complying with the one in authority. Once he failed to follow an order, he will be cast out from the system.”
(21) The little Prince was so astonished with how the parents love and protect their children .How he wished he stays here and be a child of these parents forever, be loved and protected by them. Until, he noticed something. The planet has no children, only the parents are there. So, the Little Prince asked the parents, “Please forgive me, mother and father, (he remembered how the parents are called) but I don’t see any of your children. Where are they?”
(22) The parents suddenly became sad.” Our children have grown up. Some were able to live by themselves, others have become parents now. We really miss them,” answered the mother.
(23) The Little Prince looked at the parents. He thought of how great these parents are. Aside from the teacher and lamplighter, these parents thought of others, their child, that is, another selfless type of creature that he met in his journey. He then gave them a comforting smile and realized its time for him to go. So, he bade them goodbye.
(24) The mother hastily asked, “Why, don’t you like to be our child?”
(25) The Little Prince smiled and told her, “Thank you, mother, I already am.”
(26) Realizing they could not keep the little Prince from leaving, they hugged him again and whispered to him, “take care, child, remember, we always love you.”
(27) The little Prince was really touched, he almost cried. He felt the same thing when he left the fox who became his friend. As he remembered his friend, he realized that he has just been tamed by these parents. And so here he is again taking the risk of weeping a little, just like the parents do for they have considered the little Prince as their child.
(28) The Little Prince, concealing his sadness, smiled at them again and left.

Assignment #3: THE LITTLE PRINCE, Chapters 19 – 26
Due date: July 6, 2007
a) Q: If u were to organize the 100th year anniversary of Little Prince publication, what Little Prince – related activities would you organize and why?
A: I would organize a play so that everyone who watches it refreshes their memories about the adventure of the pilot with the Little Prince.
b) Q: What adult quality does Little Prince have? What child-like quality does he have? Would you recommend this book to adults or to children? Why?
A: The adult quality that the Little Prince has is that his being protective. He protects his plants and the volcanoes in his planet by removing the baobabs while they are young.
The childlike quality of the Little Prince is that he always asks questions and is persistent until his question are answered.
I would recommend this book to both children and adults because this book shows how different adults are from children. For adults to be able to discover their follies and for children to show great forbearance for grown – ups. This book might help them understand each other.
c) Q: What life story of the author Antoine de Saint Exupery is related to his novel?
A: Similar to the pilot in his novel, Saint Exupery is a pilot. He, along with his navigator, crashed in the Libyan Sahara Desert en route to Saigon on December 30, 1935 at 14:45, after 18 hours and 36 minute flight. They suffered dehydration in the desert.
d) Q: What happened to the little prince at the end of the story?
A: He let the snake bite him. That was the step he did in order for him to get back home to his planet. He left his body but the pilot discovered it was gone the next morning.
e) Q: Why didn’t the pilot tell his companions about his true feelings when they finally found him? How is he related to our life when we conceal our true feelings from others?
A: Because the pilot knew that what’s important to his companions was to see him alive.
When we conceal our true feelings from others, they wouldn’t know what we truly need. When we conceal our sadness, we can only rely on ourselves and the memories in our heart to comfort us.
f) Q: What important message or truth about life can you get from the following lines?
1. “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye.
• What one sees outwardly does not tell the true worth or value of a person or a thing. One has to know him, befriend him, until such time that one discovers the inner quality of that person or that thing.
2. “I am responsible for what I have tamed”, said the fox.
• What one has tamed, becomes his friend. He comes to love him and care for him, look after him especially if he got sick. He Makes sure he is happy and doing well. So, whatever will become of the tamed, the one who tamed him, is always a part. For that, the tamer is responsible for what he has tamed.
3. “Words are the source of misunderstanding”.
• Sometimes, we are better understood if we keep silent and just let our heart speaks through eyes. Words we utter sometimes do not agree with what we really want to say.
4. “What makes the dessert beautiful is that somewhere it hides its well”.
• What seemed to be an ordinary place might be a plce with a hidden treasure in it.
5. “I thought I was rich with one flower, that was unique in all the world; and all I had was a common rose”.
• We thought we what we have is the greatest thing only it turns out that everybody has it and it becomes just an ordinary thing. We failed to look at the true value and the uniqueness of what we have.
6. “If you love a flower that lives on a star, it is sweet to look at the sky at night.”
• We tend to treasure things or places that have something to do with our happy memories. It’s feels nice and sweet to look at them.

Assignment #2: Chapter 10 – 18
Due date: July 1,2007
a) Q: Who uttered the line, “ One must require from each one the duty which each one can perform”? What is the real life significance of this line?
A: The King uttered the line “ One must require from each one the duty which each one can perform”. The real life significance of this line is that one must assign tasks to a person according to his/her function or abilities for a job to be done well.
b) Q: What is the meaning of “ It is much more difficult to judge oneself than to judge others”?
A: One tends to look at other people’s fault more often than he does to himself.
c) Q: What is meant by “Conceited people never hear anything but praise”? Does this kind of people actually suffer from this hearing problem?
A: Conceited people believe they have all the best qualities a man could have. All they actually want to hear are nothing but admirations. People of this kind do not suffer hearing problem. They just seemed so because they ignore negative comments.
d) Q: What is the irony of the line, “I am drinking so that I may forget”? Could you relate similar line that you hear from people?
A: The irony of this line delivered by the tippler is that to forget that he is ashamed of drinking, he should stop drinking. I hear similar lines from people who say they drink until they get sober because they want to forget about their problems. The truth is problems need solutions and drinking will never solve the problem.
e) Q: Why does the businessman want to become rich? How is the character related to real life people?
A: The businessman wants to become rich so he could buy more stars, if any are ever discovered. People don’t get contented with what they already have. They work and work in order to become rich so they could buy all they want even though it’s not really necessary.
f) Q: What is meant by “ There is nothing to understand. Orders are orders”? What is its real life significance?
A: Orders are command that must be followed for the sake of complying with the one who is in authority to give orders. There should be no questions asked. Employees follow orders from their boss to keep their jobs. In military, men follow orders given by their high ranking officials otherwise; they will be punished or expelled from the military.
g) Q: How did the little prince perceive the character of the lamplighter? Do you agree with him? Why?
A: The little prince perceives the lamplighter as someone who is thinking of something else besides himself. I agree with the little prince. Compared with the King, the conceited man, the tippler, and the businessman, who were so engrossed on thinking of nothing but themselves, the lamplighter thinks of how his work be done in spite of the fact that he has so little time to rest.
h) Q: What truth about adults does the geographer represent? How does he represent this truth about adults?
A: Adults tend to receive information from what they hear in the news and magazines. They seemed too busy on their works for them to explore.
i) Q: How did the pilot describes the planet Earth? How would you describe it?
A: The earth is not just an ordinary planet. There are 111 Kings, 700 geographers, 900,000 businessmen, 7, 500, 000 tipplers, 311, 000, 000 conceited men. All in all, the earth has about 2, 000, 000, 000 grown – ups. For me, the earth is a wide sphere that has many living things such us humans, animals, and plants on it..
j) Q: The snake describes himself to be more powerful than the finger of a king. He also said that he speaks in riddles because he solves all of them. What made him say this statement?
A: The snake describes himself to be more powerful than the finger of a king. He also speaks in riddles because he solves them all. According to him; whoever he touches he sends back to earth from whence whoever that he touches came from. The Little Prince moved the snake to pity him, so the snake offered help for him to take him back to his own planet if the Little Prince go too homesick.
k) Q: What truth about life is reflected on chapter 18?
A: The truth about life in chapter 18 is that some people wander in search for life’s meaning. In the process they seem to neglect to establish themselves in one place. It is difficult to find for their whereabouts.

Ma'am, here is my project:
a) Their reaction looks like they still don't understand the drawing, so they advise the pilot to devote himself to geography, history, arithmetic and grammar. That's why he became a pilot. Adults treat children in a way that they let their children learn only what they want the children to learn.
b) By that time, the pilot's patience was exhausted because he was in a hurry to start taking his engine apart. He tossed his drawing and threw an explanation on it.
He has drawn a box where he claims that the sheep is inside. That is, if you are asked to do something, you must give explanation and have patience on what you are doing.
c) Because he was in a turkish costume, no one would believe him. Grown ups believe only on persons in formal wears.
d) Adults believe only the fact that is understood by all people.
e) Baobabs are trees that are as big as a castle. they start by being small and become big in time. Like baobabs,we start to think small things, and as we grow up, well have more ideas to ponder.
f) The little prince was angry and he stared at the pilot because the pilot seemed to be like the grown ups when he said "matter of great consequence".
g) A place where no one can find that has sad emotions.
h) Volcanoes maybe active or extinct. They may explode abruptly without warning. It's like our emotions, sometimes happy, or sad, or angry.
i) The flower. She implied "Dont linger like this. You have decided to go away. Now go."
j) she coughed in order to put the little prince in wrong. She coughed two or three times. some people cough to take their attention in modern days.
k) The Little Prince and the flower love and care for each other.
